Getting Older

It's my birthday this weekend. 35 years old. I don't think that 35 is particularly momentous so I'll be celebrating in private with my family. My love Kerry is also celebrating her birthday, but she has forbidden me to name her age. Let's just say she's a smidge older than I am. We'll be kicking back this weekend, wondering where it all went.

I must say that I'm enjoying my thirties - especially since shitcanning booze three years ago. That made all the difference in the world. Since then life seems to have come into focus. Writing and art have become my driving factors (and obsessions). My role in the arts community has become clearer. I've found someone with whom I'm very happy and want to make a life with. I'm about to become a stepfather - a role that will likely prove to be my biggest challenge yet. Lots of fun so far.

And happy V-Day tomorrow. I refuse to partake in such shameless consumerism. I can't do it. Love the idea of V-Day, but hate what it is in practice: A guilt-driven sham. A hand-authored card. That's as far as I'm willing to go.

Remember back when we had our whole lives ahead of us. Now we look back on what we did with all those years.

Michael Gravel: I'm a writer & poet living in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I co-founded the Raving Poets organization and the super cool Roar Spoken Word Festival. I'm the founding editor of Daily Haiku.org (past), an international, online haiku journal. I'm the author of “The Fast Places”, a poetry chapbook published by Red Nettle Press in May 2008. Where would the world be without poetry? Who knows, it might be a better place. The thing I'm here to do, the thing that gets me up in the morning, is poetry. I've had a life long love affair with words and that manifests itself in my poetic endeavors. I helped found The Raving Poets, a group of musicians and poets based in Edmonton, Alberta, who rock faces on a weekly basis with poetic awesomeness.
